Window Shutters Measuring Guide

Installing window shutters is an affordable and efficient solution to improve your home. Strong and durable, with a timeless feel, shutters occupy little space and are very easy to maintain. Whether your home is a traditional construction or a new build, window shutters are elegant and versatile adding a touch of class that curtains struggle to match.

What are the benefits of window shutters?

Ideal for any shape window -  but particularly suited to bay windows - shutters not only look attractive, but serve a number of purposes, all of which add intrinsically to your property’s attraction.

Filter light: This is especially significant in homes with large windows. Whilst light is important, insulating roller shutters effectively control the amount of light that comes in, as and when you desire

Staying warm: Quality shutters regulate indoor temperatures, keeping heat from escaping and minimising the amount of cold air coming in. And in in the long term it’s efficient as you’ll be able to reduce energy bills.

Less noise:  Noise disturbances can pose problems for many people, particularly those living in vibrant, built-up areas. Apart from minimising levels of noise entering your home, window shutters are great for keeping sound in without disturbing your neighbours

Privacy and security: Shutters add an extra degree of privacy when it’s required, blocking the view of the outside world into your home, making you feel more safe and secure.

Thinking of installing window shutters?

With a considerable choice of shutters available it can be difficult to know where to begin, but knowing the exact dimensions of your window area(s) is a logical place to start. You’ll possibly have a maximum budget in mind, so it’s useful to know how to measure the window area and be able to calculate an overall cost in square metres, before you enter into any discussions with businesses.

Many people are often daunted by the prospect of measuring their windows for shutters - for fear of getting it wrong - but in truth it’s straightforward if you take your time. Instructions for measuring will vary slightly depending on whether you are measuring a bay window or standard window and an inside or outside mount.

Things to consider when measuring for window shutters

  • you’ll need a good quality steel tape measure, a spirit level and a steady hand

  • it’s advisable to make time to do this without any form of distraction

  • you’ll need a paper and pen to note down the measurements and perhaps a second person to help you

  • remember to always measure the opening at the point of the window where the shutter frame will be installed.

  • measure in three places: left, centre and right

  • record the smallest or tightest inside measurement in inches

  • repeat the same process for measuring height.

As an example, a 15-inch wide shutter looks right to most people on just about any window that is 36 inches high or more, provided the shutter is about the same height as the window

Additionally, for bay windows

  • start from the left hand side, outer edge of the window frame

  • measure from the centre point of the angle to the next angle or cut line on the sill.

  • for height, measure from the sill to the ceiling, or top of the reveal top/window frame
