Many people are often daunted by the prospect of measuring their windows for shutters - for fear of getting it wrong - but in truth it’s straightforward if you take your time. Instructions for measuring will vary slightly depending on whether you are measuring a bay window or standard window and an inside or outside mount.
Things to consider when measuring for window shutters
you’ll need a good quality steel tape measure, a spirit level and a steady hand
it’s advisable to make time to do this without any form of distraction
you’ll need a paper and pen to note down the measurements and perhaps a second person to help you
remember to always measure the opening at the point of the window where the shutter frame will be installed.
measure in three places: left, centre and right
record the smallest or tightest inside measurement in inches
repeat the same process for measuring height.
As an example, a 15-inch wide shutter looks right to most people on just about any window that is 36 inches high or more, provided the shutter is about the same height as the window
Additionally, for bay windows
start from the left hand side, outer edge of the window frame
measure from the centre point of the angle to the next angle or cut line on the sill.
for height, measure from the sill to the ceiling, or top of the reveal top/window frame
